General Horta Nta Na Man Sworn In as Transitional Leader After Guinea-Bissau Coup

Guinea-Bissau has once again been thrust into political uncertainty as General Horta Nta Na Man was sworn in on Thursday as the transitional president—just one day after military officers announced they had overthrown President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The ceremony, held at the military headquarters, was attended by senior officers and select government officials, according to journalists from AFP who witnessed the event.

Nta Na Man, formerly the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, declared, “I have just been sworn in to lead the high command,” moments after taking the oath. Known in recent years as a close military ally of President Embalo, his sudden rise to transitional leader has raised questions about internal fractures within Guinea-Bissau’s political and military landscape.

In his first public address, Nta Na Man asserted that the military had gathered “sufficient evidence to justify the operation,” though he did not provide specifics. He emphasized that the situation demanded “urgent and important measures” and called on citizens, government actors, and community leaders to participate in stabilizing the country. The general also signaled that the transitional government would prioritize restoring “order and confidence” amid rising international scrutiny.

The coup, carried out by a group identifying themselves as the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” is the latest in a long series of political upheavals in the small West African nation, which has faced chronic instability for decades. In a televised statement on Wednesday, the officers announced Embalo’s removal, citing failures in governance and growing security concerns.

The African Union (AU) swiftly condemned the takeover. In an official statement, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat called for the immediate and unconditional release of President Embalo and all detained officials. The AU also urged the military to return to constitutional order, warning that sanctions could be imposed if the situation is not resolved promptly.

Regional bodies, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), are expected to deliberate on the crisis in emergency meetings in the coming days. Analysts fear that this latest coup could trigger further instability in a region already grappling with a wave of military takeovers.

As the international community watches closely, Guinea-Bissau now enters yet another uncertain chapter—one that will test its resilience and the military’s promise to restore order rather than deepen the divides within the nation.
